This is a novel about the adventures of Phil Thorndyke, a bored land surveyor living in Great Britain. Around Christmas, 1862, Thorndyke receives a letter from a friend and prior co-adventurer -- Robert Cottrell -- who had been directed by Earl Dalton to sail by mail-steamer to South America, landing at Buenos Ayres, and making his way across the pampas, or vast plains of that country, to the westerly side of the Argentine Republic, for the purpose of collecting as many botanical treasures as possible.

While this plot might seem tame, boring, even, be assured there is plenty of action -- robberies, government uprisings, and more. Fast-paced, rip-roaring set in South America, but could easily be Texas, Utah, or Oklahoma.
