The Invisible Shield is a chronicle of some of the sleep journeys the author experienced while she and certain members of her family were plagued by a generation curse. On one of her journeys, she learned that the door was willfully opened, at the very origin of her family, for evil to enter.
All through the times of her struggles, confrontations, visitations, and rescues, she often wondered why her life was so wretched. Also, at an early age, Verna learned her sleep was not just sleep, but also a corridor into the invisible world where she spent hours while her body slept. Hearing disembodied voices, day and night, was part of her everyday life.
Certain members of her family practiced Hoodoo. They passed on their way of life to receptive females in the family, which included training Verna for the role of Priestess. She was chosen because she had “the gift” according to her grandmother and great-grandmother. But Verna rejected their efforts and refused to obey.
As a result, she was harassed by spirits from the dark side all of her childhood and much of her adulthood, and she was severely punished by both her grand and great grandmothers during her early childhood. Long after they were deceased, the powers of darkness continued their attacks. So much so until Verna was convinced she was born to be miserable.u.
