'Into Africa' is a non-fiction account of a coming-of-age teenager. The book is based on a 1973 - 1974 journal written by Fritz Spang, describing his travels through Europe and Africa during a year-off from college. The book, in diary format, expresses the wonderment, anxiety and exhilaration of a travel campaign that is filled with new experiences. It crosses war zones, game parks and drug deals and relationships gone bad. It’s accompanied by photographic evidence of an unbelievable trek through out-of-the-mainstream African countries. Many of those countries are simply no longer accessible today because of the ensuing war damage from the time the journal was written. The journal reflects a tipping point in the history of emerging independent African countries.
