Vincent Van Gogh was 27 years-old when he first picked up a brush and started painting. Within ten years he was dead. The enormity of volume and the legacy of the works he painted over that short span changed the world of art forever. Van Gogh’s brother, Theo, was the sole financial support for Vincent during this ten year period.
The Mistral Wind focuses on the tumultuous and intensive final two years of Van Gogh’s life. In those last two years he created an astounding total of about 400 paintings; many of them are the masterpieces that are so well known today.
This story follows Van Gogh from Montmartre in Paris, where he lived with his brother Theo, to Arles in the south of France where he tried to launch a new artist colony, to an asylum in Saint-Remy, and back again to Auvers-sur-Oise on the outskirts of Paris.
The Mistral Wind carries us on the powerful journey of a man who fought rejection at every turn, madness in his darkest hours, and still discovered grace and beauty in the intensity of his painting and in his quest for the unity of art and life.
Although true to the historical record, The Mistral Wind is a work of fiction. It is a study of Vincent Van Gogh. It is not intended to be a history or a documentary of those times but merely an interpretation.
