In the second half of Mark's Gospel we are confronted with the paradox of the cross. During his itinerant ministry Jesus' adversaries were not able to lay a glove on him. But in Gethsemane, the Twelve are dumbfounded to see him submit to arrest, and they flee in panic. At his Jewish and Roman trials Jesus has almost nothing to say.
He endures the sadistic hazing of the Roman soldiers without protest. At his crucifixion his only words are a cry of abandonment shortly before he breathes his last. Three women are the only followers who witness his death and burial. The paradox is finally resolved on resurrection morning when the women hear the angel's message, “He is risen!”
