It carries the prevalent fashion of the novelist to draw his material from a study of the occult further than we remember to have before noticed. To tell the plot of such a story would spoil the reader's pleasure. Suffice it to say that we have thought-transference, somnambulism, clairvoyance, ghosts, murders, hauntings, visions, and re-incarnation piled up in one ghastly heap.

There are many improbabilities, and there is enough horror to make a nervous person's hair to stand on end, "like quills upon the fretful porcupine."
