The lover of beautiful furniture should receive "Jacobean Furniture," by Helen Churchill Candee. It is an able little treatise on the art of knowing and being enabled to collect a certain period furniture, together with a brief study of English styles in oak and walnut. There are descriptions of early Jacobean styles, in the time of James I. down to Charles II., with a chapter on the end of the pure Jacobean in the latter half of the seventeenth century. There is also a chapter on the Carolean styles of the Restoratio, together with those that came after the reign of William and Mary. Delightful scrapes of history and gossip are woven into this study of a craft which has undergone so many changes and has been influenced by such varied tastes and demands.
