Three murders and two attempts on his life was not what USAF investigator, Major Charlie Snider bargained for when he was dispatched to the island of Taiwan to investigate alleged irregularities in the Air Force’s Contracting Center.
This is a novel of conspiracy, bribery and murder in the quest for lucrative United States Air Force contracts in Taiwan: The big bonanza, a $40 million, five year contract.
While Major Snider is en route to Taiwan, the commander of the Contract Center which he is to investigate is killed in an automobile accident; apparently from driving drunk. In order to facilitate his investigation without revealing it to those in the Center and the three Air Force Bases the Center supports, Major Snider is assigned to succeed the dead commander.
In that position he learns that the deceased commander was a devout Mormon whose religion prohibits consuming alcohol spirits of any kind. The leader of the Mormon Temple along with a close female friend of the deceased commander, are convinced that it is a case of murder. Major Snider is skeptical at first, but the murder of a Captain in the Contracting Center, his own injury resulting from a hit-and-run accident, and a questionable death of a female local nationalist working on one of the bases causes him to rethink his position.
Against his better judgment he gets romantically involved with the sister of a small time local nationalist gangster who works for one of the crime bosses on Taiwan. To complicate matters, the crime boss who is interested in winning the 40 million dollar Air Force contract is also the father-in-law of Major Snider’s deputy.
With the souring of the relationship between Charlie and the local nationalist, his interest turns to a female agent of the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations who is assisting him in the unraveling the mystery he was sent to investigate.
