When many people think of the term "trout fishing" they automatically think of "fly fishing" and with good reason as insects are a major food source for all species of trout. This book is not about "fly fishing" however, as my mentor was not a person who engaged in this popular style of fishing. He was an ultralight spin fisherman and used ultralight gear and baits to do all of his trout fishing. Because of this, ultralight spin fishing is what I was introduced to all of those years ago and is the technique that I continue to employ to this day when I am fishing for trout and is the style of fishing that this book revolves around.

Since my time in Pennsylvania, I have fished for trout all over United States (including Alaska) and the principles that I learned from this fishing master have stuck with me throughout the years. As I have spent time on the water honing my skills, I have learned many more tips and techniques that continue to help me to catch trout on a consistent basis. One of the techniques, drift fishing (which is outlined later in this book and was taught to me by JRW), is a technique that I continue to use to this very day with a great degree of success and is a fishing technique that extends far beyond the world of trout fishing. As a matter of fact I "drift fish" for many species of freshwater fish including but not necessarily limited to; large and small mouth bass, whitefish, steel head, salmon and even walleye.

Ten years ago I moved to Montana, a place that many anglers consider to be a trout fishing Mecca, and began to take the act of "trout fishing" much more seriously than I had in the past. As I practiced and honed my skills (fishing for trout 3-4 days a week for more than 10 years) I realized where is was that JRW was coming from all those years ago when him, his son, and myself would head out onto the river to do some trout fishing. Although I was young at the time, it somehow seemed as if JRW was teaching us about more that just "fishing", even though at that time I didn't have a clue what these teachings might be.
