Orthodox ally, anatomy was known to be the science dealing with the structure and function of the living organism. However, Darwin’s theory on the evolution of the human being from an ape-like ancestor aroused so much controversy during the latter half of the nineteenth century that most anatomists began to confine their attention to the morphological studies of human beings and their nearest kin, that is, monkeys and apes.
