"I dropped my earring. I…" Letting my voice break slightly told him everything I wanted it to, before I explained. "It was my mother's. One of the only things I have left...
"
"Don’t worry, we'll find it. He slid to his knees beside the table and started looking.
Feigning interest in his chivalry I thanked him and slid the card reader from my purse over his credit card and back in less than five seconds.
His hair brushed my leg as he searched and an idea came to me. I shifted a bit in my seat, moving my feel enough to reveal the earring.
"Aha! Found it," he exclaimed. Aaron lifted the piece of jewelry and slid his hand up my leg as he stood up to give it back.
I shivered a bit from his touch but composed myself by the time he sat back down and handed me the earring. "My hero."
He grinned and shrugged, full of modesty. It occurred to me that he was perfect. Too perfect. My mind ran through everything I'd noticed about him, trying to make sense of it, but I couldn't quite figure him out.
"Want a hand putting it back in?"
I shook my head. "No, I'll just put it away so I don't lose it again." I slipped the other earring out of my ear and reached to place them in my purse, but Aaron got there first. He lifted my bag from the bottom and I knew what was going to happen but couldn't stop it. My purse fell from his hand and the contents fell out on the table. Makeup, my phone and the card reader. Shit.
"Sorry. We're quite an accident prone pair, Miranda." As he shoved everything back inside the bag I started to relax. He was some business guy. A sexy business guy who had managed to make hardened, focused me weak in the knees, but still. He wouldn't have any idea what it was. I believed that for just as long as it took for him to lift the reader and examine it briefly. His eyes went cold and that jaw clenched again.
"Um, I'll get that," I stammered, reaching for it.
Aaron held the reader just out of my reach and the corner of his mouth quirked up. "On the job I see."
My blood ran cold and I couldn't speak or move. I'd never been caught before. Never came close. False bravado seemed the order of the day. "I have no idea of what you are talking about."
"Sure you do." A devilish smile spread across his face as if he enjoyed seeing me in this situation. He slid his chair closer to me, very close, his eyes never leaving mine.
I tried to protest but he glared at me. Damn it. He was intimidating, I couldn’t dare to speak. All the playfulness was gone. He showed me the truth behind his eyes and I trembled.
I was in a lot of trouble.
