* 34 Illustrations by W. J. Hennessy (Engraved by W. J. Linton)
This is a noble ballad in every way. The masculine energy and grasp of passion of it surprise us at first, especially in a writer in whom gentleness is so conspicuous a feature. But where genius is, the qualities of strength aud gentleness go always hand in hand. Were the poem cleared of some obscurities of sentiment, and conventional expression, characteristic of a class of writers, known as the Syncretic School, into which Elizabeth Barrett Browning is apt to fall, and were some pains taken to amend the halting cadence of certain lines, it would befit to rank, at distance certainly, but that not immoderate, with Tennyson's "Locksley Hall."
--Tait's Edinburgh Magazine, Volume 11, 1944
