Dear Diary,
Father is working; Mother is chattering; Cat is fussing; Marianne is drawing; Charles is whining; I am writing in this diary. So things are normal in the Hartford household today.
But perhaps that will change tomorrow. Perhaps we shall become desperately poor or rich beyond our wildest imaginations. Perhaps some of us will die tragically or fall in love and live to see our dreams made manifest. Perhaps some of us will travel to the far corners of the globe. Perhaps we will have a great adventure worthy of writing in a novel.
Or perhaps we shall stay right here in our tenant cottage in Norfolk, England, doing nothing particularly interesting.
In any event, I shall be sure to record whatever happens here. So if we do have an adventure, it will be preserved in these pages.
