Graduate student Tish Banks is on a mission: to find the elusive ivory-billed woodpecker in the Louisiana bottomland state park and redeem her father’s reputation. Excerpt:
Michael suspects that Tish is hiding something from him. “So…why does a beautiful woman like you spend a summer in a swamp hunting for a bird?” he probes mildly.

Tish tries explaining her obsession in finding the rare woodpecker—“…And I’ve only got enough money to last the summer.”

“But it’s not safe to go so far in the swamp,” Michael reiterates in exasperation.

All through dinner, Tish continues to argue with Michael about her quest. “And another thing—”
