Harlem Mosaics tells the story of Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes, and their collaboration on the play "Mule Bone." Throughout this collaboration they interact with other luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance like Wallace Thurman, Aaron Douglas, Nella Larsen, Bruce Nugent and Charles S. Johnson. Overshadowing the creation of their play is their patron, Charlotte Mason, an austere wealthy white woman who insists on being referred to as Godmother. As Hughes and Hurston become more and more dependent on Mrs. Mason's money and patronage, they find their own friendship challenged along the way.
