The Charwoman's Daughter

This novel traces the development of a young girl's character from childhood to the dawn of young womanhood, to the time when love and lovers and possible marriage emerge from the land of romance to become faint realities on the horizon of her everyday world. Mary is the daughter of an Irish charwoman of impulsive nature and vivid imaginations. Mary and her mother are practically the only characters in the book; the others—the policeman, Mrs. Cafferty. Mrs. Cafferty's lodger—are shadowy figures who stand out but faintly against the Dublin background.
