It's December 23 and the temperature in Chicago is fifty-two degrees. Sidewalk Santas swealter as they ring bells to attract donations. The forecast is for more of the same. Two cars of Chicagoans leave Chicago for family Christmases in Nebraska. CJ, a too young widow, travels alone with her Christmas memories before the accident that took the life of her beloved Michael. John, Kris and their infant son, Alex, are excited because this is their first family Christmas. Halfway to Omaha, Nebraska a storm that had been through Oklahoma and Kansas heads north. Mother Nature surprises everyone including weathermen. The beautiful weather turns into a monsterous blizzard with driving winds and huge, wet snowflakes. The trip ends as both cars become stranded less than a city block apart. The storm's fury blocks their vision. After struggling through the night, isolated and worried, the storm abates. CJ, in her car behind the other car sees a flashing red light and assumes it is a signal for help. She is in touch with her parents via her cell phone. After planning a rescue with less than her parents approval, CJ strikes out to help the people sending the intermittent signal. This is just the beginning of her adventure. Solving problems along the way, CJ achieves the dangerous and heroic rescue.
