Parvenu

Even at the young age of nine, Kayin has always rebelled against the strict socio-cultural rules of his village, Yatora. He asks questions that shouldn’t be asked and refuses to listen to his betrothed, Dania, no matter how taboo it might seem to everyone else. Secretly, his Aunt Aayin encourages him to think beyond the traditions put in place by their ancestors and urges him to make his own path in life. However, when the previous ruler of Yatora is murdered, he is elected to replace him. Kayin then realizes that taking control of his own life may be harder than he originally expected.

As he grows to be fourteen, people continue to give him a destiny they intended for him to follow: assassinate the evil world ruler, Xiven. Tentative at first, he unites forces with whoever will join his rebellious cause, starting with brash-and-secretive Dhekk, who serves him as a mentor.

Parvenu sheds light on harsh truths of betrayal, politics, fears and strength. Throughout the stretch of six years Kayin must learn to break through the passive patterns he created and grow into the outspoken and vengeful leader he needs to be in able to defeat Xiven.

Parvenu is the first of a trilogy that captures the essence of a young adult coming of age story in 115,000-words.
