The niece of a rich and rather eccentric bachelor leaves him to marry the man of her choice, a poor but gifted young poet.
The orphaned Phyllis has a blissful life with her doting guardian uncle, save for his bitter hatred of her dead mother, whom she comes to resemble. Then she falls in love and must face her uncle's extreme disapproval for the first time.
