A sampling comparison of the spellings of common words by pupils in grades two to eight of more than forty years ago with those of the present decade favored those of the earlier period. It showed that the percentages of correct spellings of the pupils of the former period were higher on all grade levels than the percentages of correct spellings of pupils of comparable grade levels today. For some words on some grade levels, the correct spellings of the earlier period were more than 50 percentage points higher than the spellings today.
