Rosa Mendoza takes her son Jose to Utah to live with Pedro her brother, because she is afraid that Jose would follow the path of his older brother who joined a gang and was killed by the police in a gun fight. Jose is upset about leaving his friends and the only home he had ever known.
Rosa chose Utah, because the headquarters to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is there and there are a lot of Mormons living in the state, she believes that Utah would be a better place for Jose a safer place than in California where there were not as many members of the church and there was a lot of gang activity in their neighborhood.
Jose quickly finds that there are just as many challenges in Utah as there was in California. He finds that there are not a lot of Hispanic people in the ward he attends, and that among the Hispanic students at the school he is the only Mormon. He even finds some anti-Mormon feelings among some of the students. He ends up being approached by gang members and beaten up his first week of school.
