Oxford Class of 1850 is the thus far unpublished narrative of
what happened to the 33 cadets enrolled in The Maryland
Military Academy of Oxford, Maryland. The Academy
operated, under the direction of Brigadier General Tench
Tilghman, between the years of 1847 and 1855 with the
intention of training “gentlemen in the Southern sense.” The
surnames of the Class of 1850 read like a who’s who of the
State of Maryland with each leaving the Academy to make
their own mark on history in the Civil War and the State of
Maryland. This narrative shows how many of the cadet’s
paths crossed after leaving the Academy, often times on
opposing sides of conflict.
