A Single Drop of Ink

Frederick, a refugee from war-torn Saint Domingue(modern-day Haiti), his emotionally frail wife, Abigail, their slaves, and their cook, a free woman of color, form the pre-Civil war household of the Barrets of Savannah, Georgia. Together they create a rich cast bound by love, secrecy, and servitude. Neither Abigail's goodness nor Jessie's talents can keep the household from spiraling down a course of destruction set in motion by Frederick who is determined to forge a new life of power and prestige, no matter what the cost. The story takes readers back in time and exposes them to the realities of life in a society that questioned a person's rights and even his humanity if he were known to have so much as a drop of black blood. Abigail and Jessie give he reader intimate insight into what it was like to be female and black in the antebellum South.
