AMERICAN MOTH is a family-saga. Sally Richfield, a working-class single woman from East London, provides the spark that ignites the dormant life of Bill Randolph, an unhappily married American on business to the English capital. What follows is his one and only affair after twenty-four years of marriage. Upon his return to the San Joaquin valley, surrounded by Steinbeck-country, farms, fields, and backwardness, he’s consumed by his longing for the Englishwoman who’d shaken him to the core.
Bill, a moth drawn to the light surrounding Sally, questions his role as a husband to Gloria, his role as a father to his rebellious son, and his contribution to a profession that helped poison the land he loved dearly.
American Moth, at times dramatic, at times funny, is a journey of discovery, a search for meaning to Bill’s ephemeral life, not unlike the ephemeral life of insects he’s spent a lifetime exploring.
It’s a story that asks the reader to question his or her own life’s choices.
