Immigrant life is a struggle, and Izzy Cohen longs to escape his family’s poverty and old-fashioned ways and become a real American. He follows his brother into a life of petty crime on New York’s Lower East Side during the 1920s, but a tragic accident changes the course of his life forever. Through the Great Depression and World War II, he explores the many pathways to become the man he wants to be.
