Despite death threats, Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador persisted in his "preferential optionfor the poor" and refused to abandon those needing his support. "Martyrdom," he wrote, "is a grace from God which I do not believe I deserve. But if God accepts the sacrifice of my life, then may my blood be teh seed of liberty and a sign of hope." Dorothy Day had a profound concern for the plight of the poor. She admired the creative manner in which St. Therese of Lisiex showed how God's outreach of love empowers all people to hope.
