Here are 3 vampire stories that pre-date Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and that possibly influenced his writing.

The Skeleton Count, or The Vampire Mistress was first published in the British serial magazine The Casket in 1828. Elizabeth Caroline Grey is credited as the author, although there is some uncertainty around this. This is one of the very first English language vampire stories, and also the first by a woman author. Elements of the story have become mainstays in the vampire genre: the Count with the castle on the hill, a vampire mistress who seeks the blood of young maidens, the villagers storming the castle, and the wooden stake to kill the vampire.

The Grave of Ethelind Fionguala by Julian Hawthorne was first published in 1887 in the American Lippincott’s Magazine. It was also released later as Ken's Mystery. Julian Hawthorne was the son of famed American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was an accomplished writer on his own. This story is the first vampire story written by an American. It tells of an American artist’s experiences in the Irish countryside with the ghost of a vampire victim. This version is from a later edition.

Let Loose by Mary Cholmondeley was first published in 1890 in the British serial Temple Bar. It tells of an American architect who visits an old English village church to see its frescoes, but finds more than he was looking for. This version is also from a later edition.

The cover picture is an illustration by D. H. Friston for the vampire story Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, first published in the magazine The Dark Blue in 1872.
