Here, together, are two of Susanna Rowson’s most popular and famous novels: “Charlotte Temple” and “Lucy Temple”.
Susanna Rowson (1762–1824) was a British-American novelist, poet, playwright, religious writer, stage actress and educator.
“Charlotte Temple” was her most famous work. It was first published in England in 1791 under the title “Charlotte, A Tale of Truth”. The first American edition was published in 1794 and the novel became the first American bestseller. It has gone through over 200 American editions. It tells of the seduction of a British schoolgirl by a dashing soldier, John Montraville, who brings her to America and there abandons her, pregnant and ill.
“Lucy Temple” was first published posthumously (together with a memoir of the author by Samuel L. Knapp, which is included in this edition) in 1828 under the title “Charlotte's Daughter, or, The Three Orphans”. It tells the story of Lucy Temple, who is the orphaned daughter of Charlotte Temple, the main character in the first novel.
The cover picture is a watercolor portrait of Susanna Rowson in her early years.
This eBook edition was carefully prepared by referring to original sources to correct scanning errors that are common in other versions. Old spellings and word usages have been preserved, but obvious spelling and other typesetting mistakes in the originals have been corrected. Various original editions were consulted and each was found to contain unique spellings and errors. Word forms that were more common were adopted for this edition.
