My name is Stan Singer and I was an inmate at the ORANGE COUNTY CORRECTIONAL facility. The New York Justice system took away my freedom but they couldn't take away my dreams. Sometimes when I dream I go to a place where I really am the criminal they think I am. I wrote this book because I was forced to plead guilty to a crime I didn't commit called felony scheme. Since I have already served my time I figure I might as well be guilty. Felony scheme is planning a felony but not necessarily committing one.
In this book I plan the worst felonies of all, serial murder. There are other crimes as well. This is a work of fiction just like the act of pleading guilty when you're not. I never committed the crimes that I had to plead guilty to. I was threatened by the judge, who told me that he would put me away in prison for a very long time unless I took a deal. Funny, as he was the same person who asked me if I was coerced into taking my plea. How do you say yes when the person doing the coercing is the same person asking you on record if you have been? The whole system makes me sick. I was in jail without a hearing for half a year. Court appearances were constantly being
continued and rescheduled on purpose until it didn't make sense to fight anymore.
This book is about a man just like me who goes to jail unjustly and again just like me becomes a monster. I never dreamed of revenge and murder before my incarceration. I never had any idea how to commit the many crimes described in this book. I learned it all in jail.
In this book you will meet Eli Epstein, who after a lengthy time in jail, learns all the tricks of the trade: con games, grifting, card sharking, and even the desire to commit murder. After his release from jail, it's a nonstop crime spree. He tries to get back a resemblance of the life he once had.
He first gets a job working for contacts he made on the inside. It is not a regular job. No real employment is ever offered to ex cons. The job he gets is joining a crew that robs drug dealers. It is a modern day Robin Hood Story. All the while he also plots his revenge on the people who put him away for so long behind the barbwire fences.
The book is full of action, sex, con games, gambling and gruesome murder. You are sure to love it. All the research for this book took place behind bars. Countless hours wasted away staring at four walls with little to eat and interaction with very dangerous people. I had to become someone else to survive, a real monster. While trying to survive in jail, I got to know many people who will resemble characters in this book. In fact almost everyone is derived from someone I met during my time in jail.
No one can imagine what it was like being there in Orange County. The population is around 90% gangs. Bloods, Crypts and Latin Kings rule the jail. There is only one guard on duty per cell block of about 100 inmates. Some of the cell blocks have more inmates than that.
The guards do not control the jail, the inmates do. The original draft of this book was passed from cell to cell and from inmate to inmate. Even the guards read portions of it. Inmates actually fought each other to be interviewed for a chance to be part of the story. Thanks to all of you for helping make this book so realistic. Also, thank you for not shanking me for killing your likeness off in the many pages to come.
I actually wrote five manuscripts while I was there. This was the last one of the five to be drafted. The others all are very different. There was a lot of trouble with completing these stories. First you can never have enough writing materials. I had to steal most of the paper. A lot of the drafts were written on inter jail request forms, the back of mental health evaluations and even commissary sheets. Getting writing instruments is even more difficult since they can be used to make puncture devices or shanks. I had lots of help liberating the pens and pencils from guards who broke the rules and brought in their own pens for paperwork. The only pens allowed are garbage. They are silly putty pens that bend in every direction while you're using them and only last a few pages. The pens and pencils were collected for me by many daring inmates who wanted to see me keep writing.
During a shake down the entire manuscript was lost. It was thrown away by the vindictive jail management with all of my other belongings. It was fished out of the garbage by two inmate friends, who helped me put it back together. All the pages were out of order and the job putting them back together bigger then Massive Manatee.Enjoy!
