Our hero, Robert Rushton, is poor, but honest, forthright, and resolute. His father has, apparently, drowned at sea and, unbeknownst to Robert or his mother, has deposited a fortune -- $5,000 -- with a neer-do-well factory superintendent, and father of a snobbish son -- a thorn in Robert's side, who causes Robert to be fired from his factory job.

The troubles escalate for poor Robert until an act of almost unbelievable heroism begin to turn the tide. But, his problems are not over. Will he and his mother ever get the $5,000? Is his father really dead? Will the superintendent's son ever get his comeuppance? Very unusual for Alger's books, Robert actually shoots an evil-dooer with the intent of killing him. An action-packed story, sure to satisfy anyone's love of adventure.

This edition of the book contains 10 unique illustrations from the general time period.

* This e-book is a true representation, from a high-definition scan of a pre-1923 print version of the book. Unlike other e-copies of the book, it was not produced by using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). OCR-scanning old books is seldom, if ever, error-free. This often results in an e-book with many **, ^^, >> and typographic errors when OCR can't read the word or punctuation correctly.

* "True representation" means that if there are typographic, spelling, or grammatical errors that the editor judges to have minimal impact on the book's comprehension, they have been preserved; otherwise, they were corrected.

* In other words, no changes or as few as possible have been made to either illustrations or text in order to bring you an e-book that is as close to the original as possible.
