Agnes Grey

A novel by Anne Bront'"e published in 1847 which narrates the story of Agnes Grey. Agnes is a dutiful clergyman's daughter who goes into the world to seek employment while dealing with the pressures endured by nineteenth-century governesses in order to contribute to her family's financial well-being. Her several positions are described with deadly accuracy--the bratty children, the yapping dogs, the secretly disdainful other servants, the un-involved parents. All are rendered here in minute and telling detail. The book itself is drawn so strongly from the authors own experiences that one could say its Anne Bront"e's autobiography. It serves as a great novel for English literature and Feminist study courses.
