Perhaps the most profound of Anatole France, the 1921 Nobel prize winner in Literature. La Révolte des Anges (The Revolt of the Angels) starts with Maurice who discovers one day that a book he owns went missing. The responsible party turns out to be Maurice's guardian angel who, having read some books, decided that against the religion and wants to break with the bonds of heaven and tyranny. As the story progresses, the guardian angel will deal with the old front, the initial followers of Satan that made up the first resistance, and who wanted to overthrow God.
So in a way, the Revolt of the Angels is literally the plot of the book. A world full of irony is Anatole France's world. And it is also here that surrealists could not keep up with him, since France doesn't seek to persuade, convince, or convert. Nothing is free from irony.
