Seventy-two CCC camps were authorized in West Virginia during the nine years the CCC program was in operation, 1933-1942. Because three camps were never funded, the total number of active CCC camps in West Virginia was sixty-nine. Although information on these camps is rare, author Milton Harr has meticulously researched these sixty-nine camps and provided interesting information on them. Details include dates of operation, camp name and number, location, work projects, camp superintendents, company commanders, and whether any facilities from the camp still exist.
Although much has been written about the Civilian Conservation Corps nationwide, little has been available on the CCC camps in West Virginia. It is hoped that gathering information on the CCC camps in West Virginia will provide a useful glimpse into an important part of the state and nation's history.
