What was a vacation like in 1874? Well, for the privileged young college man of New England, a vacation with pals was quite an adventure, judging from this entertaining account left to us by Frank E. Clark, who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1873. Clark later graduated from Andover Theological Seminary and a church pastor before founding the Christian Endeavor movement. Clark was a prolific writer with dozens of articles and books to his name. However, this early writing effort preceded his later ministry successes and is written more for the purpose of providing advice to the person making travel or vacation plans. This book was written before the invention of the automobile and is thus an interesting look at what life was like before the paved highways and airports changed the American landscape forever.
