This was the first book written of the Leatherstocking Tales. Chronologically, it falls in fourth place. James Fenimore Cooper portrays life in a new settlement on New York's Lake Otsego in the closing years of the eighteenth century. It is about a now middle-aged Natty Bumppo (known as “Leatherstocking”) and Judge Marmaduke Temple. The story begins with an argument between the Judge and Leatherstocking over who killed a buck. The book is really about nature and the stewardship of the land.
