Soon after turning eighteen, Amy undures the heartache of having her father and sister declared dead, allowing closure with that part of her life. After establishing a career as a paralegal, Amy petitions the state, requesting that her mother be allowed to come live with her. In the beginning, everything seems to go well, but the stress of working long hours along with leaving her mother home alone finally takes its' toll. After an anonymous delivery leaves her mother sitting on the floor bleeding from several cuts, Amy has no choice but to place her in a group home with 24 hour supervision.
With support from a few of her friends, Amy begins seeing a psychologist, hopoing to resolve her past and put an end to the nightmares. Encouraged to confront her fears, she returns to Mexico with ther friend Bryan, hoping to remove the chains that bind and find the courage to face the future.
Spending a few days in Cabo San Lucas was everything Amy had hoped it would be. Filled with adventure and some unexpected drama, she finds time to reflect on what she really wants out of life. She is finally able to let go of some of her past and embrace the future. As she returns home, she is determined to make the best out of whatever life brings her way.
After attending a birthday party with Bryan and some of his friends, Amy discovers that she missed a phone call from the group home. Unable to reach anyone, she stops by to check on her mother only to find her missing.
