American Travelers

American Travelers came out of the experience of Steven M. Silver as a historian. Fascinated by the individual stories that make up the American experience, two decades ago he began collecting those stories from farmers and outlaws, soldiers and doctors, mothers and bird watchers, truck drivers and criminals, and many others. His hope was to find, within the stories of these individuals, a way of understanding that great experiment called America. He put their stories, their voices, into poetry, requiring only that they all be true. They start with a colony founder in 1683 and conclude with a physical therapist in 2012. Few of the Travelers are well known, though almost all were present at significant points in American history.
