In this beautifully illustrated tome, noted early twentieth century artist and writer Ernest Peixotto shares his adventures traveling from New Orleans, across Texas, Arizona, and up New Mexico, documenting places of interest and noting their historical significance. He finds the Spanish influence still very much alive in the Southwest, mixed in with Native American culture, and at times is shocked that he is still in the same country as his native New York. Learn about the Spanish influence in New Orleans; about the battle of the Alamo in San Antonio and of the other Franciscan missions there; of the Indian revolts against Spanish rule in New Mexico, and the founding of Santa Fe and Taos; and of the white dove of the desert, San Xavier del Bac south of Tucson, Arizona, founded by Father Kino. In the end, he shows how Taos, New Mexico became an artistic center for the Southwest. The book is full of beautiful paintings and sketches by the author.
