The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter is the beautifully powerful translation of an old German tale, "Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden" (The Monk of Berchtesgaden).
Upon his arrival at a gothic German monastery, Ambrosius becomes intrigued with Benedicta, a young lonely girl. Unwelcome as the daughter of the hangman, she is alienated by the village. He befriends her despite the objections of the Abbot, his fellow monks, and the townspeople. When Benedicta catches the eye of a young rogue, the tenseness of the situation heightens, tossing Ambrosius and Benedicta into a complex tangle beyond their control.
