This 6,300 word illustrated monograph with many unpublished or rarlely seen photos describe the misssed opportunities, lack of knowledge of documented serious problems with the shuttle tiles and the rush forward to meet schedules that led to the loss of the space shuttle and its crew.
Columbia, part rocket and part airplane was a first of five Orbiters (Enterprise was not an orbiter in the real sense of the word) that would energize the world, and move humans forward into the space age. Just as in the days of John F. Kennedy, the first five years of the shuttle program was like living in Camelot. The 24 previous missions were successful. The “small glitches” such as tile damage, and computer failures, would go unnoticed, or unconcerned, and often unreported in the public media. Then in 1986, Camelot came crashing down before us on live TV, in the form of the Challenger explosion.
