The Fast One
World Champion Jack Blakemore and Alex Cavelli, an Italian Prince, are Grand Prix drivers who move about Europe from one Formula One race to another. Cavelli, the aristocratic challenger, courts danger and thrills, but also wins races. Is he courting destruction or not? Blakemore races with the knowledge that the most acute danger—and the most intense pleasure—is payable by death. And Elizabeth Ashford, an American girl on her first trip to Europe, is smitten by both men, but is too young, too naïve to grasp the terrible stakes for which they play. Elizabeth may be their prize, but life is their only triumph.

Author’s note: The time period of this novel is the early 60s. As this edition is published, the open roads of the past have been replaced by closed, carefully sanitized circuits, and no grand prix driver has been killed at the wheel since 1994. The 24 Hours of Le Mans still exists, but major drivers will not race it. Today’s racing is not how it was back then, as the author, who was there, can attest, and the story that follows is true to that former world.
