This may not seem like Science Fiction now, but back when this book came out, airplanes were thought to be a passing fad at best. This book was published a mere 4 ½ years after the Wright Brothers first flew in Kitty Hawk. In this prophetic novel, Wells predicts a war between the US and both Germany and Japan, but this war is fought primarily in the air.
