Père Aurégan, a Dominican monk, has been chosen by his superiors to lead the Lenten Services at the Court of Napoleon III. On the evening of his last sermon he receives a visit from a noble lady who wishes to confess, and who imparts to him a horrible secret. The secrecy of the confessional forbids Aurégan to reveal the name of the murderer of the Comte de Vallauris, but he succeeds in saving the woman who is wrongly accused of the crime. Shortly afterwards Père Aurégan's father dies and leaves him a fortune; the young priest secedes.
"The Apostate" is a novel of much more than ordinary power, and In a field somewhat new. In morals it is unobjectionable, and in style noble and impressive. The translation has been carefully done.
