The English critic, Joseph Jacobs, translated for the "Golden Treasury Series" the "Oraculo Manual" of Balthasar Gracian.
Gracian was a Spanish Jesuit of the early part of the 17th century, and the work whose title Joseph Jacobs translates "The Art of Worldly Wisdom" is a book of maxims. These are the clever, somewhat cynical, bits of advice which a man who knew the world gave in regard to winning success and station. They are elevated, but not "too much so," and their principal value is a literary one. It is interesting to know from Jacobs' introduction—which is a dainty, very pleasant piece of writing—that Gracian's maxims were very constantly read by Schopenhauer.
