This novel is all about love, and match-making, and the distresses of a young rich marquis and a very beautiful girl he had chosen for his wife.

In the progress of the tale, tho hero and heroine are on the point of breaking one another's hearts, simply because they were married before they had the opportunity of being thoroughly well acquainted. We do not know whether the author intended to "point a moral" with this pretty little novel; but the inevitable conclusion to be drawn from "The Semi-Attached Couple" is, that marriages in high life are, nowadays, becoming, in practice, something very similar to the French 'marriage de convenance'-—the main source, admittedly, of the lax morality that prevails among the higher and middle classes on the other side of the Straits of Dover.

"The Semi-Detached House" was excellent, but this is even better. This novel has many characteristics which particularly commend it. Among others it is a scholarly work as regards style and composition; another, it is intensely interesting, without being sensational or improbable; a third, the author's descriptions of English high life are evidently from actual experience and not romantic imagination; and finally, the characters are drawn with the hand of a master, the descriptions in many instances being a keen and telling satire upon life, society and people we meet at the present day everywhere. As a sketch of English life in the higher classes, it is admirable and correct. As a work of fiction, it is one which can be read with both profit and pleasure.
