A very pretty game of cross purposes do the hesitating characters of this entertaining novel play in their love affairs.
Everyone seems to have doubts, and the doubts influence their actions to such an extent that they soon mix themselves up in a most delightful tangle, from which it requires all the ingenuity of the author to extricate them at the finish of the story.
The chief performer is Pauline Cathcart, beloved by Sir Gilbert Strachan; she falls in love with one Wray Waterhouse, who is already married. There is a scene at a dance, and then Waterhouse leaves England and rejoins his wife, conveniently left at the Cape.
Two years later Sir Gilbert renews his suit, and Pauline, after a long Btruggle with her scruples, accepts him. That very same day a letter arrives from Wray Waterhouse to her mother, announcing that his wife is dead and that he is now on the way home—presumably for the purpose of marrying Pauline. Fearful of disturbing existing arrangements, Mrs. Cathcart keeps this news to herself, with the result that when Wray and Pauline eventually meet, explanations ensue, and poor Sir Gilbert is sent to the rightabout. But the truth of the matter is that Pauline has got over her previous infatuation for Wray, and is only influenced by her preconceived notion that he must be exceedingly miserable—which he is not, having fallen in love elsewhere. And so the story goes on, all the characters misunderstanding each other in the most delightful fashion until all is made clear at the finish. But how this is accomplished we must leave the reader the pleasure of finding out.
