The author's plans to marry the man of her dreams were upended when he was diagnosed with HIV. Finding herself suddenly inside the frenzy of the AIDS epidemic, and a full-time caregiver, she lived in fear of feelings and emotions she could not acknowledge lest they interfere with her desperate need to "think straight" to keep him alive. After his death, she was overwhelmed by feelings that alternately terrorized and shamed her, while the only remedy she knew was to deny and ignore them and hope they would go away.

They did not, of course: "old feelings never go away," she says now, "they just lie there inside you waiting to be acknowledged." Eventually, she started reading books about her brain, to see if science could tell her how to deal with the great barriers she had erected to moving her life forward.

What she found is something that all non-scientists need to know: what our brains would tell us they're doing with fear and love, anger, rage, embarrassment, as well as our memories and intuition and consciousness--our "responses" to life. Knowing can empower each of us to live with our feelings, unashamed and insecure--as nature itself may have intended.

As she learned, she invented unscientific experiments that everyone can do, enabling readers to experience for themselves, as she did, that our brains have evolved to ensure our survival and wellbeing. "Living deliberately," she says, comes from knowing what's really going on in our heads and not merely being victims to feelings we think are out of our control."
