On a summer night in 1958, Spooner Hays, son of King Ivory Hays, is face down on the courthouse lawn in Delta County, Texas, drowning in his own blood. King Ivory, self-appointed king of the Hollow, a bottomland area populated exclusively by people of color, is a man who also wields considerable influence in the white community. He wants retribution for his son’s death.
Spooner’s white friend, Gray Boy Rivers, is in a rooftop jail cell thirty yards away and four floors up when Spooner dies. Just out of high school, the boys were raised within ten miles of each other—worked together—played together—but lived in different worlds.
District Attorney Buster Galt has given up a promising career in Dallas law to run for DA in his home county. Fresh with election success, he promises King Ivory justice and accuses Gray Boy Rivers of the crime.
