The version to produce this ebook is eminently faithful; William S. Rose adopts the 'ottavo rima' for his measure, and it is far better calculated than any other to give life to those epigrammatic turns with which Ariosto so often closes his stanzas, fitted for dialogue or narrative, the grave or gay, the tender or burlesque, the translator catches and portrays the humor of his author, whatever it may chance to be, with a feeling the most kindred and congenial.
The character of Rose's translation of the 'Orlando Furioso' has, at the time of its publication, already has been decided by the public; and there are few works, the popular praises of which may be so fairly defended by sober criticism. He has done wonders in the fidelity with which he has rendered Ariosto into the English language; and has given the picturesque scenes with admirable success.
Of the excellence of Rose's translation one cannot say too much. Was there not some ancient philosopher who professed the power of sending his soul on occasional visits? Has this gift descended to him? and has he made use of it to animate Ariosto? We think that Ariosto must be to him what ale was to Boniface, — what he eats, drinks, and sleeps upon; or he never could so completely have imbibed the spirit of his author. We have only now to repeat commendations on this volume: there is the same animated versification — the same careful research into all that can illustrate an obscure meaning, or throw the light of history on the inventions of fiction.
