The tale begins in winter, with Masha at an age of seventeen and in mourning over her mother's recent death. Masha and her younger sister, Sonya, both live with their governess, Katya, and are awaiting the arrival of their guardian, Sergey Mikhaylych, to clear up their affairs.

Sergey, thirty six years of age, was a friend of Masha's father. Soon after his arrival, it becomes apparent that there is an attraction between Masha and Sergey. At first, due to the difference in their ages, Sergey is hesitant to acknowledge his feelings towards Masha. But this reluctance eventually passes. They both confess their love and affection for one another, and proceed to get married.
